Black Friday vs. my impulse control: a rigged fight

August 24, 2026 · 4 min read

Short version

  • Black Friday weaponizes urgency and novelty — the exact triggers my brain runs on.
  • I have never saved money on Black Friday; I have only spent it faster.
  • The defense happens in early November, before the fight starts.

A rigged fight

Black Friday is not a sale. It is a carefully engineered trap built from countdown timers, scarcity banners, and doorbusters — which is to say, built from my exact activation triggers.

Urgency, novelty, and a ticking clock. The three things that switch my brain on, welded directly to a checkout button.

I used to treat that as a challenge. It is not a challenge, it is an ambush — run by professionals with a budget bigger than my annual income.

My track record

The evidence sits in my closet, some of it still in the original packaging.

  • A “70% off” jacket I have worn exactly once.
  • Two kitchen gadgets, one never unboxed.
  • Headphones bought to replace headphones I already liked.

I did not save money in any of those years. I spent it faster and called the speed a discount. The discount was real; the need was manufactured. Three Novembers of evidence, and the pattern was undefeated.

The November defense protocol

Fighting the trap from inside the trap does not work. So I moved the entire fight to early November, when my brain is calm and nothing is screaming at me yet.

  • Unsubscribe from the worst sender lists before mid-November.
  • Write the real wishlist now — if it is not on the list, it is not a deal.
  • Set one total budget, in writing, somewhere visible.
  • Every unplanned want goes into a 48-hour quarantine before purchase.

The quarantine is the killer feature. Most wants do not survive 48 hours of sobriety. My future self, the one holding the credit card at midnight, is not consulted — he has terrible judgment.

How the last one went

Last Black Friday I bought two things. Both were on the October list, both under budget, and both are still in use. The quietest, cheapest Black Friday of my adult life.

The emails came, the timers counted down, and for the first time it felt like watching a storm from inside a house. You do not beat a rigged fight by fighting harder. You beat it by choosing the arena before the other side does.

Do this now

Give your next want a 48-hour waiting room before it reaches your card.
