Build exit ramps into your doomscroll

Infinite scroll removed the one thing that used to stop you: the bottom of the page. No bottom means no natural pause, no moment where your brain gets asked “continue?”.

You are not choosing to keep scrolling two hundred times a night. You made one choice — open the app — and the road did the rest.

Time blindness finishes the job. Without external markers, twenty minutes and two hours feel identical from the inside.

In-app timers fail because they ask your consent at your weakest moment. Real exit ramps do not ask.

• Set a hard downtime schedule, with the passcode held by someone else — or written down and left at home.
• Park the phone in another room during the hours you usually lose.
• Move the app off the home screen so opening it is a decision, not a reflex.
• Charge it outside the bedroom; the last scroll of the day is the longest one.

A good exit ramp works at 1am, when your negotiating skills are asleep.

Quitting the scroll leaves an itch, and an itch with nowhere to go drives you straight back. Plan the replacement before you need it.

• Keep one low-stakes alternative within reach: a book, a puzzle, a notebook.
• Make a short menu of “instead” moves and stick it where the phone used to live.
• Match the replacement to the moment — tired scrolls want comfort, bored scrolls want novelty.

You do not beat a dopamine source with nothing. You beat it with a smaller, kinder one.

Keep the bar embarrassingly low. A replacement you will actually do beats an admirable one you will not.

Some nights the ramps fail and the scroll wins. That is data, not verdict — note which ramp failed and reinforce that one.

If a ramp keeps failing, the ramp is wrong, not you. Move it earlier, make it physical, or hand the passcode to someone who gets more sleep.

Roads with exits get used differently. Build enough of them and one night you will surface after ten minutes and wonder what changed.
