Getting feedback without spiraling for three days
Updated August 2026 · 5 min read
Short version
- The sting of feedback is about the threat response, not the content of the comment.
- Feedback is data about one output, not a ruling on your worth.
- Decide nothing for 24 hours — the second reading is always smaller.
Why one comment echoes for days
Many people with ADHD describe feedback landing physically — a flush, a dropped stomach, a week of replaying it. After years of being corrected, one more correction can feel like proof of something bigger.
The three-day spiral is a reaction, not a review. The volume of the feeling says nothing about the size of the problem.
That gap between the comment and the reaction is the whole working space. You can't shrink the sting, but you can stop it from making decisions.
It also distorts the content. By the third replay, the comment has grown teeth the original never had.
The 24-hour rule
When feedback stings, change nothing and decide nothing for a day. The second reading is always smaller than the first.
- Write the comment down verbatim — the actual words, not your translation.
- Separate the fact from the story you built around it.
- Reply or act after 24 hours, not during the flush.
- If you must respond immediately, buy time: “Thanks — let me think about this properly.”
- Notice the body stuff — heat, tight chest — and let it settle before you read it again.
- Don't crowd-source the sting. Polling five friends for reassurance feeds the spiral.
The verbatim step matters more than it looks. Your brain edits feedback while it replays it, always in the harsher direction.
One change, one ignore
Feedback becomes useful when it shrinks to actions. Pull one thing you will actually change, and give yourself permission to ignore one thing that doesn't apply.
If the feedback is genuinely useful, it will survive 24 hours. If it doesn't, you just saved yourself a spiral over noise.
Then close the file. Re-reading the comment for the fortieth time is not processing; it is the spiral wearing a productive hat.
And if the comment was delivered badly, you are allowed to keep the useful part and discard the delivery. Those are separate items.
Data about one output is not a verdict on you. The output is allowed to have a bad day; you are not the output.
