Hungry-angry-tired: your early warning system

Updated August 2026 · 4 min read

Short version

  • Irritability and fog are often body states wearing a mood costume — check the body first.
  • The snap is a late-stage symptom; your real early warnings are subtler and learnable.
  • Snack stashes and check-in anchors catch the crash hours before it picks your afternoon apart.

The mood that is actually a meal

Everything feels annoying, the task feels impossible, and the day feels personal. Then you eat something and the world returns to its normal size.

Body states often arrive dressed as emotions. Hunger, thirst, and tiredness show up as anger or fog first, and as a clear signal only much later.

Many people with ADHD describe hunger cues arriving late or not at all. That means the mood signal often fires well before the stomach one does.

Your tells are subtler than snapping

The outburst is the last warning, not the first. Earlier drafts of the crash are quieter, and they repeat.

  • Rereading the same sentence three times.
  • Small things feeling weirdly insulting.
  • Every task suddenly looking enormous.
  • Cold hands, flat patience, loud sighing.

Watch your own version for a week. The pattern is personal, but it is a pattern.

Catch it at snack stage

Once you know the tells, the response is logistics, not willpower. Food has to be closer than the crash is.

  • Stash real snacks where you work, not just in the kitchen.
  • Keep a bottle of water in your sightline.
  • Anchor a body check to events: after lunch, at 3pm, before meetings.
  • When a tell fires, eat first and diagnose later.

Something with protein or fat outlasts a sugary rescue and slows the next crash. Tell one person you trust about your tells too — an outside spotter catches what pride hides.

When it keeps happening

A daily 3pm crash usually means lunch was too small, too late, or missing. Adjust the input before you judge the output.

Manage the body and the mood often follows. This is self-maintenance, not a diagnosis — if the crashes run deep or constant, that is worth raising with whoever supports you, well beyond the scope of snacks.

Do this now

Set a 3pm body-check alarm so the reminder comes from outside your head.
