Food
Make your food visible or it will expire in silence
Updated August 2026 · 4 min read
Short version
- Out of sight is out of existence — the back of the fridge is where food goes to be forgotten.
- Visibility is the system: clear bins, eye level, front rows only.
- An “eat me first” zone gives aging food a deadline you can actually see.
The crisper is a graveyard
It is a familiar dig: the slimy cucumber, the yogurt from a previous era, the leftovers that achieved sentience. None of it was bought intending to become garbage.
This is not a willpower problem, it is a visibility problem. Many ADHD brains run on “out of sight, out of existence” — food that is not in view never makes the mental inventory.
You did not forget the spinach. Your brain never filed it in the first place, because the drawer closed. Most households can name the price of this — the food bought twice and thrown out once adds up fast.
Make the inventory visible
The goal is simple: opening the fridge or pantry should show you everything you own, at a glance, without moving anything.
- Clear bins and containers beat opaque ones — seeing it is remembering it.
- Eye level is prime real estate. Food that expires fast lives there; treats can go low.
- Front rows only. Anything living behind something else does not exist.
- Labels face forward, dates written big on the lid.
Deep opaque drawers are where food dies quietly. Treat the crisper as short-term parking, or line it and use it for drinks.
Give old food a deadline
Visibility tells you what exists. The eat-me-first zone tells you what is urgent.
One shelf or bin, always the same spot, holds everything on borrowed time: the half onion, the open yogurt, last night's leftovers. Check it before deciding what to eat or cook — it answers first.
Leftovers get a hard limit: not eaten within two days, it moves to the zone or moves out. The zone decides, so you do not have to.
Shop to the gap
The system also runs at the store. A two-minute look at your now-visible inventory before shopping stops the third jar of mustard from joining the other two.
Buy for meals you already make, in amounts you already finish. The aspirational vegetables can join the rotation once the visible ones actually get eaten.
Less food in the house, more of it seen, almost none of it wasted.
A photo of the open fridge before you leave for the store is the two-second version of the same trick.
