I built a system for my worst day, not my best

I finally spotted the pattern while throwing out my ninth planner. Every system I had ever abandoned was designed by the same guy: Best-Day Me.

You know him. He journals at 5:45, meal-preps in glass containers, and genuinely enjoys inbox maintenance. He shows up maybe four days a year and spends them designing infrastructure for the other 361. He has also never once done the dishes.

Every plan he signed, my actual life could not afford. The ninth planner went into the bin with eight blank months and one very confident January.

Now every new system has to pass one filter before it is allowed to exist: would this survive my worst plausible day? Bad sleep, zero energy, one small crisis, brain fully offline.

• If it needs motivation, it fails the test.
• If it needs setup, it fails the test.
• If skipping it once creates a cleanup debt, it fails twice.

A system that only works on good days abandons you exactly when you need it most. My worst day is not hypothetical — it shows up a few times a month, unannounced, and it used to find every system in pieces. Anything that survives that day will survive a normal Tuesday too.

The surviving design has two versions of everything: the real one, and the floor. The floor is so small it survives almost anything.

• Exercise floor: put on the shoes. Done counts.
• Planning floor: one line — tomorrow's first visible action.
• Tidying floor: clear the one surface I see first.

The trick is that floor days count fully. Not half credit, not better-than-nothing — the floor is the system, and the rest is bonus weather. Some days the floor is all that happens, and that is the design working, not failing.

Streaks stopped breaking, because the floor is almost unbreakable. And weirdly, the big version happens more often now that nothing is riding on it.
