Mornings
The Minimum Viable Morning
Updated August 2026 · 3 min read
Short version
- The minimum morning is six items you can run half-asleep, in a fixed order.
- Three things staged tonight remove tomorrow's first three failures.
- On low-battery days the minimum IS the morning — not a failed bigger one.
The floor checklist
On low-battery days this is the whole morning. Run it in order, no upgrades allowed.
- Alarm. One snooze maximum, and feet on the floor before the second one.
- Stand up. Vertical counts as a win today.
- Water. The glass you set out last night, drunk where you stand.
- Meds, if you take them. Right after the water, same order every day.
- Clothes on. The ones already laid out — zero deciding.
- One look at today's one thing. You named it last night; now just read it.
Six items, about five minutes. Done counts.
Screenshot the list or stick it on the fridge. It lives where your eyes land, not in your head.
Stage it tonight
The floor only exists if tonight-you did the setup. Three things, two minutes, right before bed:
- A full glass of water where your feet land.
- Tomorrow's clothes somewhere you can fall into them.
- Tomorrow's one thing written on paper by the kettle, or set as your first step in Start Now.
Skip the staging and tomorrow has no floor to stand on. That is the whole system: two minutes tonight buys a morning that asks zero questions.
The minimum is the morning
The floor checklist is not the failed version of a bigger routine. On the days you run it, it is the routine, and it counts in full.
- No guilt-tax for skipped extras. Extras are opt-in, never owed.
- A streak of minimums beats one perfect week followed by a lost month.
- Feeling ambitious after item six? Start the one thing. Anything beyond that is bonus.
- Log the win however you count wins — a tick on paper works.
Some mornings this is all there is. All there is, is enough.
When even the floor is too high
Some days the full six is out of reach. Low-battery days are weather, not character — and the floor exists for exactly these mornings. Then the boot sequence is two items: feet on the floor, and one sip of water.
Two items done is still the morning running. The rest of the list waits without judging, and you can pick it back up at any item, in any order, whenever the battery allows.
