Routines

The Routine Recovery Protocol

Updated August 2026 · 3 min read

Short version

  • How long you have been off decides the rung — not how bad you feel about it.
  • One day: smallest version today. A week: half size. A month: brand-new routine.
  • Banned moves: no double days, no guilt debt, no redesign mid-restart.

The ladder

Find your rung by the calendar, not by guilt. Then do only what that rung says — nothing extra, nothing skipped.

The rungs will feel too gentle. That is the design: the routine that comes back small is the routine that stays.

  1. Missed 1 day: run the smallest version today. No catch-up, no double session.
  2. Missed 2 to 6 days: restart at half size — half the steps or half the time, your pick.
  3. Missed a week or two: restart at half size, and re-anchor the cue to something that still happens daily.
  4. Missed a month or more: treat it as a brand-new routine. New cue, new smallest version, day one again.

Not sure which rung? Round up to the gentler one. A restart you actually do beats a comeback plan abandoned by Thursday.

The banned moves

These four feel productive and quietly kill restarts. They are off the table on every rung.

  • No double days: doing Tuesday twice does not erase Monday — it just makes Wednesday heavier.
  • No guilt debt: you owe the routine nothing. It owes you a floor; that is the whole deal.
  • No redesign mid-restart: two weeks of stability before you change anything.
  • No post-mortem on the ladder: rung first, analysis later if at all.

Notice that none of these are about effort. Recovery is a scheduling decision, not a character test. The calendar picks the rung; you just walk it.

The first day back

Day one of a restart has its own short list. Nothing else is required of you.

  • Do the smallest version at the cue, even badly — done ugly counts in full.
  • Mark it done somewhere visible. The streak restarts at one, and one is enough.
  • Tell nobody about the comeback; quiet restarts outlive announced ones.
  • Run it at the usual cue time even if the day is already weird — the cue is what you are re-training.

Tomorrow the ladder applies again, by calendar. It does not care how day one felt.

Small is not the consolation prize here. Small is the mechanism.

Do this now

Put the smallest version of the fallen routine into Start Now and do today's rung.
