I crash every weekend and call it rest
August 24, 2026 · 4 min read
Short version
- The weekend crash is a pattern, not a personality flaw.
- Weekdays on adrenaline means the bill arrives on Saturday.
- Rest you collapse into repairs the crash; it never touches the deficit.
Horizontal by eleven
Every Saturday the same film plays. I wake up with plans — errands, friends, that thing I've been postponing all week — and by eleven I'm on the couch, remote in hand, gone.
I call it resting. But rest is supposed to give something back, and by Sunday night I usually feel worse: groggy, behind, and vaguely ashamed of a weekend I can't account for.
For years I genuinely thought I was just bad at weekends. Everyone else seemed to come back Monday with stories; I came back with a fog and a vague sense of having failed at lying down.
The loan I didn't know I'd taken
Then I tracked one ordinary week, honestly. Five days of masking in meetings, forcing focus through noise, running on adrenaline and deadlines — each day quietly overdrawn, each deficit politely deferred.
The crash wasn't random at all. It was repayment, arriving on the first morning nobody was asking anything of me.
- Monday to Friday: spend, spend, spend.
- Saturday: the collection agency.
- Sunday: panic-recovering for Monday.
Naming it changed it. A cycle you can see is a cycle you can interrupt, and mine had been running on autopilot for years.
What I do differently now
I stopped scheduling Saturdays like a rescue mission for my entire life. Two errands maximum, plus one small thing I actually want — the day needs a spine, not a punishment list.
I also rest on purpose midweek now, in small doses, so Saturday isn't the first chance my body gets to stop. A walk on Tuesday, an early night on Thursday, an hour that belongs to nobody.
It felt indulgent at first, which should tell you how warped the old rule was. Spreading rest across the week turned out to be cheaper than paying it all back in one weekend.
Collapse is a terrible rest strategy; it's just the only one exhaustion allows.
The weekends since
Some Saturdays still flatten me, and I've made peace with that. The difference is I can now tell the difference between resting and defaulting on a loan I took out in October.
