I stopped trying to earn my breaks
August 18, 2026 · 3 min read
Short version
- Rest is maintenance rather than a reward.
- Waiting until exhaustion can make restarting harder.
- Choose breaks before focus begins.
The old bargain
I used to allow a break only after finishing. Unfortunately, “finishing” kept moving.
By the time I stopped, I was too depleted to enjoy the break or return from it.
A different rule
Breaks now belong to the schedule, not the score. I choose the stopping point before I begin.
- Short work window.
- Real pause.
- Fresh decision afterward.
Rest without optimization
A break does not need to become a perfect recovery protocol. Water, stretching, looking outside, or doing nothing all qualify.
