Don't start the task — start the first physical movement

Short version

  • Your brain votes no on whole tasks, not on movements — so only ask it to move.
  • A first physical movement is observable, tiny, and impossible to negotiate with.
  • Chain one movement to the next; momentum usually does the rest.

The vote happens too early

The moment you think “start the report,” your brain holds a vote. It evaluates the whole report — the length, the vagueness, the boredom — and votes no.

You were never going to win that vote. The report as a whole is genuinely unappealing, so your brain is not broken; it is just answering the question you asked.

So the loop runs: picture the whole task, feel the no, escape to something easier, feel worse, repeat. The exit is not more willpower — it is a smaller question.

The trick is to never hold that vote. Do not propose the task. Propose a movement.

Movements don't get voted down

A physical movement is too small to argue with. “Stand up” has no ambiguity, no unknown length, and no way to be bad at it.

  • Stand up and walk to the desk.
  • Open the document.
  • Put the pan on the stove.
  • Put the shoes by the door — then put them on.

Three rules: it must be physical, take under thirty seconds, and require zero decisions.

If your movement needs a decision first, it is not the first movement yet. Go smaller until it doesn't.

Then ask the only question

Once the movement is done, ask: what is the next movement? Not the next task, not the plan — the next thing your body does.

The document is open, so the next movement is “type one ugly sentence.” The sentence exists, so the next is “finish the paragraph.” You are chaining motions now, and the chain rarely stops at one link.

This pairs well with making tasks smaller: a well-shredded task is really just a pre-written chain of movements, so half the thinking is already done.

When the chain breaks

Sometimes you stand up, open the doc, and stall anyway. That is not failure — you just collected information about where the real friction lives, and you still moved more than zero.

Shrink the movement further and try again — “touch the laptop lid” is allowed. The wall always has a brick small enough to pick up.
