Unsticking
The “I'm Stuck” Reboot Sequence
Updated August 2026 · 3 min read
Short version
- Stuck is a missing first move, not a motivation problem — and the fix takes five minutes.
- The sequence: notice it, name the task, shrink the first step, move, set a timer.
- If a step won't budge, drop a level smaller instead of pushing harder.
Read this first
Stuck is not a character flaw. It is a start that has not found its first move yet, and this sequence is how you find one.
Run the steps in order, exactly as written. The whole point is that you follow instead of think — deciding is the thing that's broken right now, so the script does it for you.
Run it mid-spiral, on the couch, at the desk — wherever the stuck caught you. You do not need to feel ready first; readiness shows up around step four.
The sequence
- Notice. Say it out loud: “I'm stuck.” No backstory, no verdict — just naming the state changes it.
- Name. Finish one sentence: “The thing I'm not doing is ___.” One task only, not the whole pile.
- Shrink. Ask what the smallest physical move is. “Open the document” counts. “Work on it” does not.
- Move. Do that one move now, before your brain files an objection. Standing up counts as a move.
- Timer. Set five minutes. When it rings, you may stop guilt-free or keep rolling — both are wins.
Five steps, five minutes, no negotiating. Most stuck moments crack at step three, when the task finally has edges. No step asks for motivation — each one asks only for a movement.
Still frozen? Drop a level
- Can't name the task? Dump everything circling your head onto paper, then circle one word.
- Can't find a small move? Go smaller: walk to the room, touch the thing, sit in the chair.
- Can't move at all? Change your state first — water, a doorway, thirty seconds of outside air — then restart at step one.
- Still nothing after three runs? Do the step badly on purpose — a messy draft, a crooked pile, a typo on page one. Ugly starts count double.
Make the next stuck cheaper
- Write tomorrow's first physical step before you stop today.
- Keep a timer visible, not in a drawer.
- Pair the timer with something small you like — the good playlist, the fancy pen.
- Save this page somewhere obvious — stuck-you will not remember it exists.
The reboot gets faster every time you run it. By the tenth stuck, step three happens on its own, and that is the real win.
