The shame spiral has a floor, and I found it

August 24, 2026 · 4 min read

Short version

  • The spiral is a loop: failure, shame, paralysis, bigger failure.
  • Shame cannot be argued with, but avoidance can be interrupted.
  • You only have to break the loop once, at one rung — not fix your whole life.

The loop, from the inside

It starts with one miss. I forgot the email, and instead of answering it late, I felt too embarrassed to open the inbox at all.

A week later there were eleven unread threads. Each one had grown teeth.

Failure produced shame. Shame produced avoidance. Avoidance produced more failure, now with interest. I have run this loop on inboxes, friendships, taxes, and one memorable dentist.

Drawing it changed it

One night I drew the loop on paper, arrows and all, like a flowchart of my own dysfunction. Seeing it as a machine made it less of a character verdict.

  • Shame is weather — loud, but it is not a steering wheel.
  • Willpower does not exist mid-spiral, so stop budgeting for it.
  • Avoidance is the only rung my hands can actually reach.

The spiral does not need to be defeated. It needs to be interrupted once. One small action anywhere in the loop and the machine stalls, because the machine runs on momentum.

The floor

The floor is the moment I stop falling. For me it has a shape: name the spiral out loud, then do one physical action too small to fail.

  • “I am in the spiral about the inbox.” Said out loud, to an empty room.
  • Open the inbox. Read one email. Close it again. Done.
  • Tell one person: “I avoided this, and I am doing one piece of it now.”

The floor is not recovery. It is just the place where the falling stops — and it turns out that is enough to stand on.

What I stopped doing

I stopped using shame as fuel. It burns hot for a day and leaves the engine worse than it found it.

I stopped waiting to feel ready to face the avoided thing. Ready never arrives from inside the loop; it shows up after the first tiny action, not before.

And I stopped counting the days I had avoided something. The count is just the spiral wearing a spreadsheet.

These days the spiral still visits. It just does not get the whole weekend anymore — it gets noticed, named, and interrupted by Thursday.
